Services

The Centre provides support and services to former detainees and TPV holders and their families - often still suffering the legacy of the harmful policies of detention and temporary protection. The Centre also acts as an advocacy centre for refugees, organises activities for refugee families, and aims to educate the community about the refugee experience. Among the services provided by the Romero Centre are the following: hospitality and drop-in centre; a meeting place, settlement support, help with housing, employment, friendship, as well as emotional, practical and spiritual support. Visiting immigration detainees under psychiatric care in Brisbane and advocating on their behalf. Accessing various services, including legal, medical, trauma counselling. Referral and follow-up, English language classes, preparation for citizenship, sewing class, computer class and a playgroup. A women's social support group is in preparation. Welcoming the newly arrived family members and assisting in their settlement Advocacy - speaking up for refugees and empowering them to speak for themselves. Calling on government for better legislation. Community education - helping people to understand about refugees and what Australia's obligations are. Raising public awareness about human rights. Providing speakers, references and materials. Assisting researchers. Writing submissions and articles and letters to the editor.
