Interstate Ambulance Treatment and Transport Information for Queensland Residents

Individuals whose principal place of residence is Queensland, and their dependents (including individuals who are under 25 years of age and a full-time student at an education institution), are automatically covered for emergency pre-hospital ambulance treatment and transport Australia-wide.

If your principal place of residence is Queensland and you receive an invoice for pre-hospital ambulance treatment or transport provided to you or your child/dependent by another state or territory ambulance service, you are requested to forward the invoice to the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) for payment.

You will also need to provide proof that Queensland was your principal place of residence at the time of the service as follows.

Adults require:

A copy of one of the following documents:

  • current photographic identification which includes the current principal place of residence in Queensland, for example, a driver’s license (include a copy of the front and back of the license); or
  • statement from a bank or financial institution showing the current principal place of residence and the name of the institution; or
  • current Queensland issued Centrelink Pension Concession Card
  • current Queensland issued Centrelink Health Care Card; or
  • a statutory declaration, which states Queensland as the patient’s principal place of residence at the time of the service; or
  • current electoral roll registration to vote in Queensland.

Children/Dependents require:

As the guardian of the child/dependent, provide a copy of one of the documents listed above. In addition, provide a copy of one of the following documents to confirm that the child/dependent is in your care:

  • current Medicare card with the child/dependent’s name; or
  • child/dependent’s birth certificate; or
  • current student identification card for the child/ dependent.
  • a statutory declaration, which states Queensland as the patient’s principal place of residence at the time of the service.

Note:

  • Please ensure that the documentation covers the date of the ambulance treatment/transport provided.
  • The following documents are not deemed to provide proof of residency, and are therefore not accepted in relation to payment of interstate ambulance invoices:
    • telephone or mobile phone account
    • electricity account, rates notice or other utility account
    • Australian passport
    • other correspondence delivered to a Queensland address.

Interstate Repatriation

In the event that repatriation is required from interstate for medical reasons, the hospital will contact QAS prior to the transport. The clinical necessity of the transfer is determined by the QAS Commissioner. A Queensland resident receiving appropriate medical treatment in an interstate hospital may not be eligible for interstate repatriation, particularly if the request is solely based on a desire to be treated in a Queensland hospital. QAS will not automatically provide interstate repatriation back to Queensland on convalescent grounds. Before arranging any repatriation, your medical team should confirm your entitlements with QAS or your private health insurance company.
