- development of a greenfield open cut coal mine targeting multiple coal seams extracting up to 10 million tonnes of coking coal and other coal products per year
- conventional large-scale excavators and trucks
- large-scale electric rope shovels and draglines
- product coal to be transferred to a new rail facility and then transported to port for export on the existing Goonyella–Blackwater railway line
- covers approximately 12,000 hectares on two mining lease applications

Environmental impact statement (EIS)
On 20 March 2012, the proponent submitted draft terms of reference (TOR) to the department in accordance with section 41 of the Environmental Protection Act 1994 (EP Act). On 16 April 2012, the department approved the application under section 72 of the EP Act.
In accordance with section 46 of the EP Act, the chief executive of the department prepared final TOR for carrying out an EIS for the project. The final TOR were issued to the proponent on 5 September 2012 and the EIS was due on 5 September 2014. On 14 August 2014, the proponent applied and was granted an extension of the EIS submission deadline to 31 August 2015. On 11 August 2015, Coal of Queensland Pty Ltd (the proponent) requested that the Wilton Coking Coal Project be withdrawn from the EIS assessment process.
