Possums
About possums
Brushtail possums are native, nocturnal marsupials and one of the most common native animals in Queensland's cities and towns.
Lemuroid ringtail possum
Lemuroid ringtail possums live in tall, moist, mature rainforest above 450 metres in altitude, between Cairns and Ingham in north eastern Queensland. They are a rich chocolate brown colour with paler, greyish-brown underparts and a pale ring around each eye.
Striped possum
The striped possum is hard to mistake, with striking black and white stripes along its body and a white tip to its tail. It's a solitary animal, usually seen alone.
Sugar glider possum
Sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps) are common in the coastal lowlands and inland forests of northern and eastern Australia. If you spot one, there'll be more nearby, for they live in family groups of up to seven adults with their young.
Common brushtail possum
Common brushtail possum is a large possum with bushy tail and pointy ears. They are common in campgrounds, suburban backyards and sometimes the ceilings of houses.
