The Ngumari Waanyi rangers care for Waanyi Country in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria. This includes Country surrounding Gregory, the Nicholson and Gregory River catchments, Lawn Hill, Riversleigh and Gregory Station.
Ngumari Waanyi rangers’ work includes:
- implementing an annual fire management plan to protect environmental and cultural values of Waanyi country
- increasing knowledge and protection, and improving the condition, of cultural heritage sites
- reducing Weeds of National Significance (including rubber vine and bellyache bush) and associated improvement to the health of native vegetation communities
- controlling large vertebrate pests, with associated improvements to land and freshwater country including in biodiversity values and soil and water quality
- monitoring water quality, controlling erosion and monitoring and reporting contaminant risks and biosecurity threats identified in the Nicholson and Gregory catchments
- monitoring of native fauna including sawfish, freshwater crocodiles and estuarine crocodiles
- engaging with young people for knowledge transfer about cultural heritage and caring for country through on-country and school-based activities, including School of the Air.
