Ewamian Rangers
Host organisation
Ewamian Ltd

The Ewamian rangers are based at Talaroo Station, near Georgetown and care for savannah lands in the upper Gilbert and Einasleigh River catchments. Key achievements of the rangers include:

  • Working with Traditional Owners to identify and protect cultural heritage sites on Ewamian Native Title lands
  • Recording and revitalising of the Ewamian (Wamin/Agwamin) language and culture with Traditional Owners
  • Protection of the world-class Talaroo hot springs through eradication of weed infestation and removal of damaging infrastructure to reinstate natural spring flows. This has significantly increased the population of the nationally endangered Salt Pipewort in the springs.
  • Prescribed burns to protect significant ecological and cultural sites across Talaroo and support for the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) in undertaking burns across the region
  • Working with QPWS to undertake archaeological surveys and cultural heritage assessments, providing management protocols for numerous national parks across Northern Gulf region
  • Monitoring and management of the biodiversity values of the Talaroo Indigenous Protected Area (IPA).
