The Ewamian rangers are based at Talaroo Station, near Georgetown and care for savannah lands in the upper Gilbert and Einasleigh River catchments. Ewamian traditional lands include national parks and Talaroo Station
Ewamian rangers’ work includes:
- identifying and protecting cultural heritage sites on Ewamian Native Title lands, in collaboration with Elders and Traditional Owners
- recording and revitalising of the Ewamian (Wamin/Agwamin) language and culture with Traditional Owners
- protecting the world-class Talaroo Hot Springs through eradication of weeds and removal of damaging infrastructure to reinstate natural spring flows
- implementing prescribed burns to protect significant ecological and cultural sites across Talaroo and supporting the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) in fire management across the region
- undertaking archaeological surveys and cultural heritage assessments in partnership with QPWS and providing management protocols for national parks across Northern Gulf region
- monitoring and managing biodiversity values of the Talaroo Indigenous Protected Area (IPA).
- assessing, monitoring and managing weeds, including strategies such as containment areas and signage
- monitoring feral animals such as pigs using aerial surveys, on ground monitoring, and implementing management measures such as exclusion fencing and trapping
- engaging with Elders, community and young people for cultural knowledge transfer activities such as language workshops and on-country camps.
