The Gidarjil Gladstone Land and Sea Rangers work in the Port Curtis Coral Coast (PCCC) country, covering the area from Burrum Heads, north to Port Alma. Rangers combine traditional knowledge with western science to manage country and monitor and conserve many threatened species, including dugong and marine turtles.
ConocoPhillips has contributed funding to establish the team of rangers, including their equipment and training. This partnership is contributing to the conservation of cultural heritage and biodiversity values in the Gladstone area.
Gidarjil Gladstone angers’ work includes:
- strategic weed management on coast and offshore islands, Capricornia Cays
- feral animal management (trapping and baiting) in partnership with QPWS
- sea country work including seagrass monitoring, fish and crab surveying, mangrove watch and monitoring of marine turtles
- cultural heritage surveys and site management
- community beach, river and creek marine debris clean-up events
- boat-based compliance and public engagement patrols in collaboration with QPWS and GBRMPA
- assistance with fire management in partnership with QPWS
- traditional knowledge sharing and engagement with young people through school programs, on-country activities and public events
