Djaa Narawi Rangers are based in Hervey Bay and work to care for land, sea and freshwater country around the Fraser Coast and Wide Bay region. This area extends from Burrum Heads to Rainbow Beach and includes freshwater of the Mary River.
Djaa Narawi ranger activities include:
- supporting the preservation and transfer of traditional knowledge, through Elder engagement activities on country with young people
- youth engagement activities, including the ‘Walk strong’ program with students on country and supporting senior students in vocational education and training
- cultural site management and data recording
- feral animal control and weed management, in partnership with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) and local government
- traditional fire management and participation in planned burns, in partnership with QPWS, Fire and Emergency Services and Rural Fire Services
- threatened species monitoring, including migratory shorebirds, water birds, white throated snapping turtles, dugong and sea turtles
- track maintenance and visitor management patrols on the Cooloola Great Walk
- management of sea country, in partnership with QPWS and other agencies, including whale and dolphin monitoring, fisheries patrols, turtle tagging, turtle nest relocation and visitor management
- management of freshwater country, with partners, including through wetland assessments and water quality monitoring.
