The ranger teams for Lake Eyre Basin (Kati Thanda) are based out of Longreach and Mount Isa. Rangers carry out natural resource management and cultural heritage protection work across the expanse of Queensland’s channel country. Key activities include:
- engagement with Traditional Owners of the Lake Eyre Basin on work priorities through the Georgina Diamantina Cooper Creek Aboriginal Group
- assist scientists to monitor waterways as part of the Lake Eyre Basin resource assessment project
- engaging with local community and visitors about how to stop the spread of invasive aquatic species in Lake Eyre Basin (Kati Thanda)
- compliance patrols of camping areas checking for litter and impacts on waterways including interaction with tourists
- cultural heritage conservation work for Traditional Owner groups, through recording, exclusion fencing, weed and feral animal control around key sites
- biodiversity, feral animal and weed management surveys to assist with management strategies
- feral animal management activities (e.g. baiting, trapping, exclusion fencing, survey)
- weed control along key waterways, to prevent downstream infestations of Weeds of National Significance including Parkinsonia and Prickly Acacia
- junior ranger activities with North West School of the Air at Bedourie and Camooweal.
