Lake Eyre Basin Rangers – Mount Isa

The ranger teams for Lake Eyre Basin (Kati Thanda) are based out of Longreach and Mount Isa. Rangers carry out natural resource management and cultural heritage protection work across the expanse of Queensland’s channel country.

LEB rangers’ work includes:

  • engagement with Traditional Owners of the Lake Eyre Basin on work priorities through the Georgina Diamantina Cooper Creek Aboriginal Group
  • monitoring waterways as part of the Lake Eyre Basin resource assessment project
  • engaging with local community and visitors about how to Stop the Spread of invasive aquatic species in Lake Eyre Basin (Kati Thanda) and other best practice behaviours
  • pest fish eDNA sampling in the Diamantina and Georgina catchments
  • compliance patrols of camping areas checking for litter and impacts on waterways including interaction with tourists
  • cultural heritage site recording, monitoring and management  for Traditional Owner groups, through recording, exclusion fencing, weed and feral animal control around key sites
  • feral animal management activities (e.g. baiting, trapping, exclusion fencing, survey)
  • weed control along key waterways, to prevent downstream infestations of Weeds of National Significance including Parkinsonia and Prickly Acacia
