The Yuwi Land and Sea Rangers work to protect the natural and cultural resource values of their land and sea country around Mackay.
Yuwi rangers’ work includes:
- engaging with Yuwi knowledge holders and key partners to ensure workplans align with Traditional Owner priorities
- monitoring and mapping seagrass and mangroves in significant coastal areas in partnership with QPWS and research organisations
- monitoring turtle, dugong and other protected species through sea-based patrols in partnership with QPWS Marine Parks, and compliance reporting on illegal activities
- mapping, controlling and monitoring weeds and pest animal species, especially in culturally and ecologically significant areas and sites, in partnership with QPWS and local council
- monitoring native flora such as bush medicine plants, and native fauna including water mice, ghost bats and koalas
- mapping vegetation, surveying cultural heritage sites, and reinvigorating a cultural burning program
- undertaking maintenance of tracks, and infrastructure on national parks and reserves in partnership with QPWS
- engaging with the community and young people for traditional knowledge transfer through on country and school-based activities.
