Wakka Wakka rangers work on Wakka Wakka Country in the South Burnett Region, with their ranger base located in Murgon. Their key partners include the Wakka Wakka Native Title Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC, the Bunya Working Group, Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council and South Burnett Regional Council.
Wakka Wakka rangers’ activities include:
- Caring for cultural heritage sites by conducting site assessments, developing management plans and delivering protection works
- developing a Rightfire management plan for the Cherbourg area in partnership with local government and Fire and Emergency Services, and undertaking Rightfire burning in line with this plan
- assessing biosecurity threats (pest plants and animals) and implementing biosecurity management strategies such as controlling lantana, parthenium and feral pigs and deer
- restoring the Cherbourg Nursery to be used for revegetation projects
- planning for the wetland restoration at Muddy Flats, including revegetation
- monitoring water quality and surveying macroinvertebrates in the Barambah Creek
- monitoring of threatened species such as the white throated snapping turtle and glossy black cockatoo in key habitat areas
- Elder engagement through on-country visits, cultural knowledge recording and mentoring young Indigenous people in the Cherbourg area.
