The Normanby rangers manage Normanby Station, Balnggarrawarra Country, and are actively engaged in sustainable natural resource management practices to maintain the cultural and environmental values of country.

Normanby rangers’ work includes:

  • recording and conservation of rock art and cultural heritage sites through vegetation and fire management and exclusion fencing
  • conservation of the original Normanby homestead (including vegetation and fire management)
  • fire management for healthy country incorporating traditional knowledge and other best practice
  • monitoring and management of native vegetation species such as rare Coix grass
  • feral animal management, including cattle removal and exclusion fencing to protect sensitive and important ecosystems and cultural sites
  • management and control of weeds including sicklepod, grader grass and other priority weed species
  • water quality monitoring and wetland assessments
  • large-scale soil conservation and erosion mitigation works to reduce sediment loads in the Normanby River and Great Barrier Reef Marine Park
  • youth engagement activities including hosting work experience students.
