Normanton Land and Sea rangers from the Kukatj, Gkuthaarn and Kurtijar Traditional Owner groups protect natural and cultural resources on Country in the Lower Gulf of Carpentaria. The rangers deliver on-ground activities that align with the Kukatj, Gkuthaarn and Kurtijar Country plans, in an area extending from Staaten River to Leichardt River in the southern gulf plains.

Normanton land and Sea rangers’ work includes:

  • long term monitoring of migratory shorebirds and documenting breeding colonies of waterbirds including herons, ibis and cormorants. (The rangers played a central role in achieving the declaration of the internationally recognised Wernadinga and Tarrant Migratory Shorebird Flyways).
  • traditional knowledge transfer through school visits and the Junior Ranger program
  • vegetation assessments and photo point monitoring of the perched wetlands and established vegetation monitoring sites on Wernadinga
  • sawfish monitoring with CSIRO and  crocodile surveys of priority rivers with the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and innovation (DETSI)
  • marine turtle track and nest surveys along the Delta Downs coastline and marine debris monitoring and removal to protect nests
  • planned burns on Delta Downs and  other local reserves to protect critical cultural and ecological assets
  • weed management of prickly acacia, grader grass, Parkinsonia and rubber vine.
  • biosecurity surveillance of marine pests along the coastline, and plant and animal health.
