The MinggaMingga Land and Sea rangers look after land and sea country surrounding the Palm group of islands including Great Palm and Orpheus islands, within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.
Their priorities include:
- cultural heritage management including repatriation of ancestral remains, and recording of traditional knowledge and cultural heritage assets, cultural materials, knowledge and healing places
- fire management, habitat protection, restoration & rehabilitation
- monitoring natural habitats (freshwater, island and marine), undertaking baseline assessments of plants (including bush foods and medicines) and animals;
- monitoring of weeds and rehabilitating native vegetation
- establishing a research and reef eco hub, with focus on reef, seagrass, turtle and dugong, hunting/fishing management, climate change and adaptation
- monitoring hunting and fishing compliance and responding to reported issues.
