The Pormpuraaw Land and Sea rangers deliver cultural and natural resource management on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula, south of the Edward River.
Pormpuraaw rangers’ work includes:
- monitoring of 88km of sea turtle nesting beaches to collect information on nest survival rates, and installing aluminium cages to protect the nests of endangered Olive Ridley and flatback sea turtles from predators
- monitoring and removing ghost nets along the western Cape York Peninsula shoreline
- protecting sensitive wetlands and cultural sites through the construction and maintenance of exclusion fencing
- aerial control of feral pigs and other large pests over an extensive area
- fire management including early season burns to protect the cultural and natural health of Country
- controlling and monitoring weeds including rubber vine, Parkinsonia, giant rattail grass, and Hymenachne visitor management including maintaining camping areas and signage, and providing advice to visitors
- delivering a Junior Ranger Program with Pormpuraaw State School through classroom, outdoor and on-country activities, and an annual Turtle Camp.
