The Lama Lama rangers manage the Running Creek Nature Refuge and wider Lama Lama estate in the Port Stewart area of Cape York Peninsula. Their country contains a high number of threatened ecological communities and species, including rainforests, birds, marine resources and coastal environments.
Lama Lama rangers’ work includes:
- managing sea country, supporting the delivery of the Traditional Use of Marine Resource Agreement and joint management programs
- delivering junior ranger programs and community forums for progressing sea country management
- maintaining the visitor information centre at Port Stewart and campground on Lama Lama country
- protecting cultural sites in coastal and marine areas
- undertaking visitor management and compliance activities in partnership with key agencies, including joint patrols of coastal and marine environments
- monitoring mangrove, seagrass and coral reef ecosystems and marine species (turtles, dugong, sawfish and snub fin dolphins) in collaboration with research partners to gather information to inform management decisions.
