Darumbal rangers look after land and sea country around Rockhampton and Yeppoon on the Capricorn Coast, extending to the outer reef of the Swains, and encompassing the Darumbal Traditional Use of Marine Resources Agreement (TUMRA) area, and including the southern extent of Broadsound and Shoalwater Bay.
Darumbal ranger activities include:
- Traditional knowledge transfer through on-country activities with Elders, knowledge-holders and young people, and engagement with young people in school based and on-country programs
- monitoring of threatened species including Peak Island marine turtles, Capricorn yellow chats and ghost bats, in partnership with the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation’s Threatened Species Unit
- monitoring and management of weeds at foreshore sites, in partnership with local government and the Reef Guardian Project
- feral animal management in partnership with land managers
- monitoring of marine ecosystem health and water quality, and participating in the Crown-of-Thorns starfish control program
- mapping of the cultural and ecological values of sea Country for development of a Darumbal Cultural Resilience Strategy, in partnership with the Darumbal TUMRA program
- patrols within Darumbal TUMRA for visitor compliance, with regulations related to traditional hunting and fishing practices.
