Kabi Kabi rangers work to look after their land and sea country of the Sunshine Coast, which includes the surf coast, tidal reaches of Pumicestone Passage, lakes, rivers, wetlands and swamps, eucalypt woodlands and the rainforest-clad ranges of the coastal hinterland.
Kabi Kabi Ranger activities include:
- cultural heritage site mapping, and monitoring and management of priority sites.
- partnering with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, local councils and other Indigenous ranger teams to undertake cultural burning for cultural purposes, biodiversity protection and fuel reduction, and to participate in prescribed burns.
- monitoring and conserving key threatened species on Kabi Kabi Country, with partners
- monitoring water quality and assessing wetland condition in priority freshwater areas
- removing and managing weeds in ecologically and culturally sensitive sites, with key partners
- sharing Kabi Kabi cultural knowledge with Kabi Kabi people through on-country community events and Elder engagement.
