Flora and Fungi Census

The 2024 Census of the Queensland Flora and Fungi provides a published list of all the known native and naturalised species of plants, algae, fungi and lichens in the state. Formerly naturalised and doubtfully-naturalised flora are included in the full data set but species only occurring as cultivated in the state are not included.

Our flora now has 14,767 known native species across all groups. That’s nearly double the number listed in 1913 (7,781 species). More than 20 species new to science are discovered in Queensland each year.

The current list is generated from the Queensland Herbarium specimen label information database as of 21 December 2024. These records are primarily based on the Queensland Herbarium specimen collections representing 250 years of verified specimen data.

2024 data

The census data is available through the Open Data website and presented in one spreadsheet, which can be filtered on any of the columns for subsets of the data (e.g. Botanical Name, NCA status, Naturalisation status).

More information on the classification of the data is available in the census introduction.
