Native title
Native title is a process that recognises First Nations people’s existing rights related to Australian lands and waters, and protects those rights by law.
We pay our respects to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of this land, their ancestors and their legacy. The foundations laid by the ancestors and Australia's First Nations people give strength, inspiration and courage to current and future generations to create a better Queensland.
Land transfers and title return
We can transfer some parcels of land to First Nations communities or corporate bodies to hold in trust and manage. This title return gives opportunities to own, manage and enjoy traditional lands for generations to come.
Compensation
Native title holders have a legal right to be compensated for certain acts that have extinguished or impaired (negatively impacted) their native title rights and interests since 31 October 1975.
Leasing Indigenous land
You can lease land that’s owned and cared for by an Indigenous organisation. Members of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and their relatives, can lease the land to own homes in their community. Anyone can lease land for business, cultural or development opportunities.
