Rent a private property through the Queensland Government (Helping Hand Headlease)

If you can afford a rental tenancy but can't get into the market, a headlease property may be right for you.

How it works

We lease a private rental property through a real estate agent and then sublease it to you. We call this a Helping Hand Headlease.

Are non-financial barriers stopping you from getting into the rental market?

Non-financial barriers include:

  • having a limited rental history
  • not understanding how the rental market works
  • not having the documents needed for a rental application.

At the end of the lease term, if the lease has been successful, we will work with you and the real estate agent to transfer the lease over to you.

The lease is undertaken as a general tenancy agreement. It is governed by the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008.

The Helping Hand Headlease is a product where the department may be able to headlease a private rental property on behalf of a customer.

So the RentConnect Officer will go out and identify a property, apply for the property and if approved we will then lease that out to one of our customers via the Helping Hand Headlease. The goal with our Helping Hand Headlease is to enable that customer to access the private rental property, prove that they’re capable of maintaining and sustaining rent payments, property condition.

So at the end of that headlease the customer can then apply to take over that tenancy in their own name and sign a tenancy agreement between the owner or the agent and themselves.
