New parents note: you must register the birth of your child before you can get a birth certificate.

Accessing certificates in hardship situations
If you are suffering financial hardship and have an immediate need for a certificate, you may be able to have your application fee waived.

Births before July 1974
Birth certificates do not show the surname in the child’s name section for births before July 1974.
At the time it was taken for granted that the child would use the father’s surname. If a father was not on the birth certificate, the child would use the mother’s surname.
