Borallon Training and Correctional Centre
To ensure the safety of our correctional centres during the COVID-19 pandemic, visit restrictions are now in place at all Queensland prisons.
The underpinning philosophy for the Borallon Training and Correctional Centre is to operate the centre as a fully integrated element of the Queensland justice system and aims to give prisoners maximum opportunity for positive change, regardless of how long they spend in our care. This is achieved by fostering an environment which mirrors as far as possible the normal learning and working living arrangements enjoyed by people in the wider community.
Prisoners accommodated at the Borallon Training and Correctional Centre can be on remand or sentenced and are housed within the secure or residential facilities. Borallon Training and Correctional Centre operates a busy, purposeful and structured day with provision of a wide range of services including training, programs, employment opportunities and activities throughout the core day.
As part of this innovative model, all training, employment and industry activity is focussed on tackling barriers that are contrary to the goal of reducing reoffending. Through training and employment, Borallon Training and Correctional Centre provides prisoners with new skills, qualifications and work experience, and assists in the development of personal attributes and a better understanding of standard workplace practices.
The Borallon Training and Correctional Centre prisoner training and employment model specifically targets:
- Skills: Vocational skills which are in demand in the employment market are developed to a level which demonstrates proficiency and the ability to deploy them consistently
- Qualifications: Qualifications that meet current and forecast Southern Queensland skills shortages and the needs of local employers, including industries and employment partners/stakeholders
- Experience: Undertaking a range of tasks with defined quality outcomes; working autonomously and as a team member; working under management supervision over a prolonged period of time
- Behaviour and Conduct: Attitudes, conduct and behaviours which allow people to exist and thrive in the workplace, with a focus on discipline, commitment and team work
- Appreciation and understanding: Understanding standard practices and processes used in the workplace, so that prisoners know how things work and gain the confidence to operate in a normal working environment.
