Queensland strengthens cyber security through accelerator program
The Queensland Government Cyber Security Unit (QGCSU) is actively addressing the cyber skills shortage through the Cyber Skills Accelerator Program, delivering targeted cyber security training to public sector staff since 2019.
In collaboration with TAFE Queensland, this initiative aims to provide a career path in entry-level cyber operations for existing digital professionals and those looking to transition to a cyber career.
Before the emergence of the Certificate IV in Cyber Security, there was a gap in affordable and practical cyber security operations qualifications accessible to government and community members. Recognising this need, the QGCSU leveraged the potential of the program to cater to public sector employees eager to pursue a cyber career and enhance their professional development.
As the partnership between the QGCSU and TAFE Queensland developed, the program has continually adapted, offering face-to-face and virtual courses. The Cyber Capability Team within the QGCSU works with TAFE Queensland to deliver a flexible learning experience for public sector workers. The program is designed to enable workers to complete a hands-on, interactive curriculum even while handling full-time roles.
In addition, a short IT Essentials Bridging course is now available as an optional first step in the program, for public sector workers who want to pursue a cyber career but do not have a digital or IT background.
The program’s journey and successes
To date, over 100 staff members from multiple Queensland Government agencies—including the Queensland Police Service, Department of Transport and Main Roads, Department of Education, and Queensland Health—have successfully completed the program and achieved their Certificate IV in Cyber Security. These graduates not only gain valuable qualifications but also have the chance to broaden their professional networks and strengthen the resilience of the cyber security sector.
Recognising achievements and inspiring future growth
Graduates are celebrated at an annual recognition event in December, creating an inclusive atmosphere for alumni and welcoming new participants to the following year's sessions. The QGCSU is preparing for an additional group of 50 participants to graduate in December 2024.
Future outlook
The QGCSU, alongside TAFE Queensland, is eager to continue identifying and implementing a variety of cyber training opportunities. With the objective of supporting cyber professionals at every level, the state is dedicated to fostering a strong, competent, and future-ready cyber workforce.
