Health and safety
Resources, research and training programs are available for students, teachers, health professionals and parents to help Queensland schools offer a safe and healthy environment for all students.
Health processes and procedures
Schools follow key health and safety procedures.
Some of the areas schools manage include:
- allergies and reactions
- contagious diseases or conditions (e.g. head lice)
- medications at school.
Contact your school if you have questions about these procedures. School contact details are available by phoning 13 QGOV (13 74 68) or searching the schools directory.
State schools nursing services
State schools have access to registered nurses to help them safely manage the specialised health needs of eligible students.
The nurse works with school staff to develop individual and emergency health plans. They also provide the required education, training and ongoing assistance to staff who action the health plans.
School-based Youth Health Nurse Program

Their responsibilities include:
- promoting health
- supporting the development of a healthy environment
- providing advice and information and promoting health education resources
