Thornhill Station is owned in trust by the Meerooni Warro Thornhill Aboriginal Corporation and is managed by Gidarjil Development Corporation. The project is engaging traditional Land and Sea Rangers from Gidarjil to use Indigenous land management techniques for native forest regeneration and carbon abatement.

The project has been developed in line with the goals and objectives of the Gidarjil Caring for Country Program to enable Indigenous people, including elders, Traditional Owners, men and women and young people, to undertake environmental work on country that meets their aspirations for keeping the country healthy and for protecting their heritage.

Carbon project activities will utilise a combination of traditional mosaic and fire-stick farming practices to control non-native species across the project area. Fire-stick farming is an Indigenous land management practice that utilises fire to burn vegetation and increase biodiversity, facilitating hunting and optimising the composition of plant and animal species.

This, coupled with the commitment to end livestock agistment contracts, will enable regeneration of the native ecosystems in this biodiversity hot spot. Regeneration is also expected to improve the condition and extent of native vegetation in essential habitat areas along Granite Creek. Granite Creek leads into the Baffle catchment which flows directly into the Coral Sea, contributing to the coastal waters of the Great Barrier Reef.

This project goes beyond the bounds of a typical carbon abatement project to include culturally appropriate management activities carried out by those with a connection to Country.
