Reef Joint Field Management Program
The Reef Joint Field Management Program, led by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and the Reef Authority, has been managing marine parks and protected islands within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area for over 45 years -. safeguarding its Outstanding Universal Value for future generations.
The program recognises that Traditional Owners’ knowledge and management of Country is essential in delivering sustainable outcomes for the Reef with economic, social and cultural co-benefits for Traditional Owners and the broader community.
The program excels in on-the-ground management across five critical areas:
- delivering conservation actions
- monitoring environmental changes
- responding swiftly to incidents
- enhancing visitor experiences,
- and upholding compliance.
The program’s success relies on strong and enduring partnerships with Traditional Owners, allied government agencies, research institutions, industry and local communities.
The program actively supports and builds the capacity of Traditional Owners and Indigenous rangers to protect Land and Sea Country, ensuring they play a central role in ongoing management and custodianship.
All of these collective efforts help mitigate threats, maintain natural and heritage values and build ecosystem resilience.
As a recipient of numerous awards, the program sets a global gold standard in marine protected area management by its collaborative approach, dedication to innovation and effective threat mitigation.
