Curragh North (Pisces) coal

The Curragh North Coal project proposed by Wesfarmers Curragh Pty Ltd is located in the Bowen Basin 25-35km north of Blackwater on the eastern floodplain of the Mackenzie River, and approximately 170km west of Rockhampton. The project involves an open-cut coal mine producing 7Mtpa of coal for up to 40 years on ML 80110. Coal will be screened and sized on site and will be transported 7km by overland conveyer and truck haulage to the existing Curragh coal mine located directly to the south for processing through the existing coal handling and preparation plant. A 21km long flood protection earthen levee bank is proposed around the majority of the mining lease area that will also contain all runoff on site. The proposal has undergone some changes from the former Pisces Coal Project which include:

  • Minimal on-site infrastructure, instead utilising mine infrastructure contained within the existing Curragh Coal Mine site to the south;
  • Relocating the proposed haul route to Curragh Coal Mine 1.5-3km further east of the MacKenzie River; and
  • Utilising a 100m wide corridor as part of the haul route running parallel to an existing 66kV transmission line, which will include a conveyer belt for coal transport and a pipeline for water transport between the two coal mine sites.

The impacts of these changes to the project were addressed in the EIS.

The EIS Assessment Report for the project has been issued to the proponent and the EIS process under Chapter 3, Part 1 of the Environmental Protection Act 1994 is now completed.
