Newlands coal project
An unincorporated joint venture of Xstrata Coal Queensland Pty Ltd, Itochu Coal Resources Australia Pty Ltd, ICRA NCA Pty Limited and Sumisho Coal Australia Pty Limited are the proponents for an extension to the existing Newlands Coal Project, located on the Mining Lease (ML) 4761.
The proponents are seeking to gain surface access rights to areas of the Suttor Creek mining lease not currently covered by their Environmental Authority. The proposed expansion area totals 777ha located on the Wollombi pastoral lease and a reserve for quarrying. The land is currently used for low intensity beef cattle grazing.
The development will occur approximately 129 km west of Mackay and 20 km west of Glenden and is located in the Nebo Shire. The proposed development is the extension of the existing Suttor Creek operations into the western portion of the mining lease (the proposed Wollombi area) where resources of approximately 25 Mt have been identified. The proposal includes open cut mining of the area, clearing of vegetation (including endangered regional ecosystems), topsoil removal/replacement, overburden stockpiling, coal extraction and final rehabilitation of disturbed areas. Water requirements are not expected to exceed that provided by removal of ground water inflow to the pit and incident rainfall captured within the pit and spoil areas.
The EIS Assessment Report has been issued to the proponent and the EIS process is now completed.
