Drinking water and PFAS
The Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers (DLGWV) closely monitors and regulates drinking water quality in Queensland. Drinking water is supplied by registered drinking water service providers.
Incidents are reported to DLGWV and managed to protect public health. The risk associated with PFAS contamination are managed through each drinking water service provider’s approved Drinking water quality management plans (DWQMPs).
There are six locations in Queensland where PFAS have previously been identified at higher levels in raw water sources for drinking water schemes than the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (ADWG). They are:
- Ayr (Burdekin Shire Council)
- Callide (Banana Shire Council)
- Svensson Heights (Bundaberg Regional Council)
- Hinchinbrook (Hinchinbrook Shire Council)
- Weipa Airport (Weipa Town Authority)
- Oakey (Toowoomba Regional Council)
These drinking water service providers advised the department and acted to ensure the drinking water provided to these communities was within the ADWG limits. They continue to actively monitor and manage their water supplies.
If you are concerned about PFAS levels in drinking water, contact your drinking water service provider.
