Conditions of swap/trade meets

The new licensing system does not require commercial wildlife licences for a temporary bird or reptile meeting/show. Licence holders who attend these shows can engage in trade once they are at the event, subject to their normal licence conditions. Further approvals may be required to move and display animals at these events, depending on the licence type, and the type of meeting.

A Standard licence holder can only move animals to or from a location where recreational bird or herpetological society meetings, or other sale and swap meets are held with written approval from the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI). Contact Permit and Licence Management or email PALM@des.qld.gov.au.

A Specialised or Advanced licence holder who is also a member of a recreational bird or herpetological society (e.g. an incorporated association) can take their birds, reptiles (other than a dangerous snake) or amphibians and keep and use the animals at any premises used by the society for a continuous period of no longer than two days.

If a Specialised or Advanced licence holder wants to take their animals to another type of bird or reptile sale/swap meet or wildlife expo, they require written approval from DESI. Contact Permit and Licence Management or email PALM@des.qld.gov.au.

All licence holders at these events will be required to display a copy of their licence at the premises used by the society however they may choose to cover their residential details. All normal licence conditions and requirements apply during these events, including animal welfare, trade restrictions and record keeping.
