Healthy Kindy Kids information for kindergartens

Find out how your kindergarten can take part in the Healthy Kindy Kids program.

Be part of our Healthy Kindy Kids program

We're offering free vision, hearing, and speech and language checks for all children in approved kindergarten programs. They're called Healthy Kindy Kids checks.

We've designed them to be part of your regular kindy day. They’re fun activities that involve play and help:

  • identify children who might need extra support before they start school
  • put parents in touch with relevant support services in their area.

Healthy Kindy Kids is gradually rolling out across Queensland and will be offered to every kindy by the end of 2027. The local Healthy Kindy Kids team will contact your kindy when the program is available in your area.

Planning a Healthy Kindy Kids visit

We usually do the screenings over a couple of days, so we have enough time to see all the children.

We'll work with you to:

  • help children, parents and caregivers understand how the screenings work
  • do the screenings
  • action any recommended support for the children.

Before we visit

We'll meet with you about a month before we visit to talk about the program, including:

  • how our screening team works
  • the screenings we'll do
  • what happens on the day
  • roles and responsibilities, including how to opt into the program
  • any questions you have.

We want to make sure you feel confident talking to parents and children about the program.

Your kindy's role

We'll need your help to make sure the screening days run smoothly. We'll talk to you about what’s needed and give you a checklist of things to do before, during and after the checks, including:

  • getting signed consent from parents
  • sharing and collecting parent and caregiver questionnaires
  • talking to children and their parents and caregivers about what to expect from the screening
  • making sure you have enough staff to support children during the screenings.

Before the Healthy kindy Kids checks

Your team will play a big part in helping the children, and their parents and caregivers understand the process and feel at ease. We'll give you resources to help you prepare them for our visit, including:

  • posters and a visit countdown to display in your kindy
  • flyers you can give to parents and caregivers
  • some frequently asked questions and answers to help you talk to parents and caregivers
  • a Healthy Kindy Kids story book that you can use to start conversations with the children.

You can use the countdown poster and send emails to remind parents and caregivers when we’re visiting your kindy.

Follow up and support

We're developing local referral pathways for children that need support to help parents and caregivers:

  • find and access local services
  • get any referrals they need.
