Specialist outpatients services

In outpatient clinics, hospital doctors, or visiting private specialists who come to the hospital for scheduled sessions each week, provide a wide range range of specialist medical and surgical services depending on the size of the hospital and community.

Many of our hospitals offer outpatient clinics. You need an appointment to see a doctor at these clinics. To get an appointment you need a referral from your general practitioner or specialist.

Your GP or specialist will normally refer you to the nearest public hospital where services you need are provided.

An outpatient is a patient of the hospital who has not been admitted for treatment.

Identifying people who have waited too long on the waiting list

A waiting list audit will be conducted by each hospital to check whether the person waiting still requires treatment.

Those patients that have waited the longest, and who have the highest clinical priority, will be seen first.

If patients have not been contacted by the hospital recently, and they are unsure of their progress or are worried about their condition, they should:

  • consult with their GP to review their condition;
    or
  • call 13Health (13 43 25 84) for advice.
