Private hospitals and day hospitals
A licensed private hospital or day hospital is a hospital that is licensed under the Private Health Facilities Act 1999 and run by a company or a not-for-profit organisation. It is privately funded through payment for medical services by patients or their insurer.
Licensed private hospitals or day hospitals may provide specialised or general services. Because you pay for your own medical treatment you can often choose your doctor, hospital location and have some flexibility with when treatment will occur.
Just like public hospitals, licensed private hospitals and day hospitals are required to adhere to legislation and standards designed to protect you when you are treated at private health facilities.
Accessing a licensed private hospital or day hospital
Licensed private hospitals and day hospitals are accessible to all members of the public on a fee-for-service basis. Admission requirements and fee payment structures vary between hospitals.
If you are being treated by a specialist, they will organise admission on your behalf when it is necessary.
