Supporting someone with an eating disorder
Medical monitoring
We always recommend medical assessment first, to ensure your safety. This can be with your GP and should include regular follow-up. It’s helpful if this is with the same person for consistency.
If you or someone you know is at risk of hurting themselves or someone else, call Triple Zero (000) or go to a hospital emergency department.
Treatment options
To discuss the support available for adults, call QuEDS on 07 3114 0809, 9am–4pm, Monday to Friday. You can also speak to your GP about referral options.
If you’re supporting a child or young person, contact Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) specialist eating disorder team on 07 3397 9077 or email CHQ-CYMHS-eatingDisorders@health.qld.gov.au.
Carer support
Eating Disorders Queensland (EDQ) is the recommended support service for people supporting or caring for someone affected by an eating disorder.
Families and key supports can participate in skills-based programs, coaching sessions and workshops for caring for a loved one with an eating disorder through EDQ. Contact 07 3844 6055 for community services and support.
The Eating disorders Carer help kit has detailed information on eating disorders, the different treatment and therapy options, and support for families and carers.
