Communication aids
Communication aids are assistive technology that help people who cannot speak. They can either replace speech or help with speech that is not easy for others to understand.
The Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme (MASS) offers a subsidy for:
- artificial larynges
- speech generating devices
- iPad with AAC and communication software
- voice amplification devices.
You will be provided with the basic accessories needed to use these communication aids.
Eligibility
To apply for assistance under MASS, you must:
- be a permanent resident of Queensland
- have a permanent or stable condition or disability
- hold a pensioner concession card, health care card or Queensland Government Seniors Card.
You need to be assessed by a speech pathologist. They will work with you to assess your eligibility and communication needs, and trial appropriate devices before you apply.
If you require specialised wheelchair or switch mounting systems, or specialised switches/accessing devices, you must also be assessed by an occupational therapist.
Subsidy amounts and criteria
The subsidy amount varies according to the item needed. If your item costs more than the subsidy amount, you will need to pay the extra cost directly to the supplier.
The criteria and available funding are listed in the:
- Artificial Larynges Application Guidelines (PDF, 248 KB)
- iPad with Augmentative and Alternative communication (AAC) and Communication Software Application Guidelines (PDF, 242 KB)
- Speech Generating Devices Application Guidelines (PDF, 262 KB)
- Voice Amplification Devices Application Guidelines (PDF, 245 KB).
How to apply
Your clinician will work with you to review your needs and help you in choosing the most appropriate communication aid. They will arrange trials of the communication aid so you can try it first, to see if it suits your needs. Once you have chosen the communication aid, your clinician will complete an application through MASS-eApply (online applications) on your behalf.
