Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
Talk to your healthcare team about anything you or your family need to support your cultural practices, choices and preferences. The team can help you access appropriate culturally led support that is tailored for each person and can include respecting gender and kinship roles and responsibilities.
You can talk to your team about having care at home or being on country with family and having access to culturally sensitive services while having palliative care.
Advance care yarning
If you become so sick that you can't tell people what you want, your family and health worker may need to make decisions for you.
Advance care yarning is the process of letting others know about what you do and don't want for your future and ongoing health care.
It can mean:
- thinking, talking and deciding on what matters to you
- letting others know your wishes, choices, preferences, values, and beliefs including who you do and don't want involved
- knowing your family and health care staff will have the information needed to respect your choices, your way, when you cannot speak for yourself.

Help at home
If you are finding it harder to do the things you used to, you might need some help at home. There are many support services within communities across Queensland that can help you to stay home for as long as possible.
The Australian Government’s My Aged Care website has a range of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-specific information for those over 50.
Information is available in Arrernte, Pitjantjatjara, Torres Strait Creole (Yumplatok) and Warlpiri languages.
