Condition of your rental home
Information for Queensland public housing tenants
All public housing properties available for rent meet a set of standards so that they are fit to live in, are in good repair, and provide a healthy, secure and safe home.
The condition of public housing properties may vary. Some properties are new or just a few years old, while others may be more than 50 years old.
Despite the age of some public housing properties, they are all safe and secure, and will allow you and your family to call it a home.
Before you begin your tenancy, we make sure that:
- you can open, close and lock external doors and security screens are installed on front and back doors, with keys provided
- all windows can be opened and closed, and are sealed, free of cracks and broken glass, and fitted with security
- all plumbing, electrical and/or gas appliances and fixtures are inspected, safe and working
- safety switches are installed
- operating smoke alarms are installed
- each room has floor coverings, e.g. vinyl, tiles, sealed floorboards or carpet, and have been professionally cleaned
- walls and doors have no holes
- the property is free of water leaks, mould, pests and vermin
- the property has no significant marking, discolouration, cracking or peeling painted surfaces inside or outside
- gardens, trees and yards are tidy, trimmed and free of rubbish
- internal and external surfaces and appliances are clean and free of rubbish, dirt and dust
- the property has no known structural issues that would make it unsafe and/or lead to serious health and safety risks.
Some factors don’t prevent a public housing property being ready to rent, including:
- the age of an item
- the colour of an item or multiple colours within an item
- general deterioration, marks and/or stains in or on items, such as floor coverings, vanities, bathtubs, showers, kitchen cupboards and benchtops, that don’t affect their safe use
- surface marks, stains, picture hooks, or general fading or discolouration of painted surfaces inside and outside of the property
- the paint colour
- the appeal or general look of the property or rooms in the property
- the inclusions of a property, e.g. whether it has a carport, deck/patio or air conditioning.
When you move into your home, we and you will both complete an Entry Condition Report.
