Report a stolen, damaged or abandoned vehicle
It is an offence to leave a vehicle (a car, truck or motorbike) on the road or footpath once the vehicle registration has expired.
Once your vehicle registration expires, move your vehicle onto private property to avoid an infringement and possible removal of your vehicle by the council.
Abandoned vehicles
If a vehicle is registered and is not parked illegally or dangerously, it won’t be considered abandoned.
Check vehicle registration status to identify if the vehicle is registered.
Report an abandoned vehicle
Before reporting an abandoned vehicle, check if it's on a council or state-operated road.
Contact your local council to report an abandoned unregistered vehicle on a council road. If you report an abandoned unregistered vehicle, the council will try to find the owner. If no owner claims the vehicle, the council will remove it.
For a state-operated road, you can contact the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
To report a suspicious vehicle or a vehicle that is parked in a hazardous way, go online and use the suspicious activity form. If you cannot access the internet, call Policelink on 131 444.
Stolen vehicle
If the crime is happening now, or you are in immediate danger, call Triple Zero (000).
If the crime has already occurred and it is unlikely that the offender is still in the area, report it online. If you do not have access to the internet, contact Policelink on 131 444.
Damaged property or vehicle
To be considered a police matter, a person must intentionally destroy or damage property belonging to someone else. This does not include normal wear and tear, or damage caused by entry to a premise or vehicle. Damage to a vehicle can be reported online using the property damage form.
If property has been stolen or there has been unlawful entry to a dwelling or premises, report online using the stolen property form or break and enter form.
