Dodgy traders put on notice by Office of Fair Trading

Fair Trading took another trader to court this week as it warns businesses with unscrupulous practices to watch out.

Security screen installer James Michael Kelly, trading as Full Moon Wholesale Security was found guilty in the Caboolture Magistrates Court (23 November 2022) for failing to supply and install a screen door at a consumer’s property.

Mr Kelly was convicted and fined $2,500 and ordered to pay a further $1,000 in compensation to the affected consumer.

Commissioner for Fair Trading Victoria Thomson said there had been an increase in trades people being taken to court after accepting deposits from consumers and failing to provide goods and services.

“They are doing their business and the industry a disservice by taking money from consumers and not being upfront about what they can and cannot provide,” Ms Thomson said.

“The Office of Fair Trading will not hesitate to take action on behalf of Queenslanders if a trader is not meeting their business obligations.”

The OFT encourages consumers who have purchased goods or services but have not received them to approach the trader in the first instance. If this is unsuccessful, they should lodge a complaint with the OFT at www.qld.gov.au/fairtrading or by calling 13 QGOV (13 74 68).
