New training package for private investigator licences

A new training package for private investigators under the Security Providers Act 1993, has been introduced. The Certificate III in Investigative Services CPP30619 training package will replace the former Training Package CPP07 2011.

As you know, to become licensed as a private investigator, the person applying for this licence must attach proof they have completed the required training when they lodge an application form with us.

There are five core modules and 11 elective modules from the new training package that people must complete before they apply for a private investigator licence. Details of the training package and modules are available on our website.

We will still accept proof of the former CPP07 2011 training package for private investigator licence applications up until 29 March 2021. After this date, applicants must supply proof of completion of the Certificate III in Investigative Services CPP30619.

To find out what you need to do to obtain a private investigator licence, visit our website. For further information or if you have any questions, please email us at ilu@justice.qld.gov.au.

Remember to lodge your renewal before your licence expires

It's important to lodge your firm or individual licence renewal before the expiry date, regardless of the current situation with COVID-19.  There is no grace period under the Security Providers Act 2014 to lodge your renewal late.

Late lodgement will result in your application being treated as a new application, meaning by law you cannot work until the new licence is issued.

Online renewals

With social distancing measures affecting people's mobility to move about different places, we encourage all individual licensees to use our online renewal option.

In addition to avoiding COVID-19 travel restrictions or the need to comply with social distancing rules, it will also reduce delays in the processing of your application.

Keep your personal details up to date

Please ensure you keep your personal details up to date with our office.  Not only can you receive a fine for not updating your details within seven days of any change, you may not receive your renewal form if it has been sent to an incorrect address.

Details you need to notify us of if they have changed include:

  • personal name
  • business name
  • postal address
  • residential address
  • change in your criminal history including a charge or conviction.

Notify us of your detail changes by emailing ilu@justice.qld.gov.au or by calling 07 3738 8705.

Adding functions to a licence

If you wish to add a function to an existing licence, proof you have completed the required training must be supplied before the new function can be added. This includes if you previously held a crowd controller and or bodyguard function and are now applying to have it re-added to your licence.

Document certification

If you need to have documents certified, you can find information about Justices of the Peace (JP's) in your area by visiting the website find a Justice of the Peace.

If you have difficulty in making it to a JP during office hours due to COVID-19 or you are a vulnerable person, you can have documents witnessed online by a JP

There are also Courthouses where you may be able to access the services of a JP, however, every courthouse is different, and this service may be by appointment only, so call beforehand to ask what their requirements are before attending in person.

When do you need to supply photographs?

Are you aware that the Security Providers Regulation was amended in 2015, removing the requirement to provide new photographs at each renewal?  You only need to provide photos every 10 years or if you have significantly changed your appearance.

If you are unsure if you need to provide photos, please call us on 07 3738 8705 to avoid unnecessary delays in the processing of your application.

You are reminded that when working as a licensed security provider you are required to have your photographic licence available for inspection.

Make sure you abide by the law

As always, you must abide by the law and the requirements of your licence, regardless of the current environment.

During COVID-19 we are still conducting investigations and undertaking proactive compliance to ensure fair trading laws are being complied with.

If you are concerned someone is not complying with these laws, please let us know.  You can lodge a complaint 24/7 online via our website.
