What private investigators do

Private investigators can be hired by individuals and companies to:

  • find out private information about people without their permission
  • gather information about people through surveillance
  • investigate missing person cases.

You need to hold a private investigator licence to do this job.

You don’t need a private investigator licence if you work for, or are a:

  • legal practitioner
  • accountant
  • insurance business
  • insurance adjustment agency
  • independent investigator for the Queensland Public Service.

Domestic and family violence (DFV) laws make it a criminal offence for a licensed private investigator to knowingly participate in any form of facilitation of DFV matters.
