Getting an RE motorcycle licence
An RE licence holder can ride a learner approved motorcycle.
There are a few steps to complete to upgrade your RE learner licence to an RE provisional or open licence.
- You need to pass the motorcycle hazard perception test. From 1 July 2021 you must pass the motorcycle hazard perception test before you take the Q-Ride restricted (RE) course or Q-SAFE riding test.
- You need to hold your RE learner for at least 90 days (or at least 1 year if you got an exemption from the pre-learner course). Check my Q-Ride course eligibility to see when you are eligible.
- After you have held your RE learner for 90 days, you need to complete the Q-Ride restricted (RE) course or pass the Q-SAFE riding test.
- When you complete these requirements, you can apply for your class RE provisional or open licence.
If your Q-Ride training provider directly records your Q-Ride competency declaration online with the Department of Transport and Main Roads, you may be eligible to upgrade your licence online.
If you are issued a paper Q-Ride competency declaration or you are not eligible to upgrade your licence online, you must apply for your class RE licence at a driver licence issuing transport and motoring customer service centre.
Q-Ride or Q-SAFE
If you live:
- within a 100km radius of a Q-Ride training centre, you must complete the Q-Ride restricted (RE) course
- outside a 100km radius of a Q-Ride training centre, you can choose to either complete the Q-Ride restricted (RE) course or take the Q-SAFE riding test.
Find your nearest Q-Ride training provider.
