Left hand drive vehicles
Vehicles registered overseas
International tourists and foreign defence personnel are permitted to bring their left hand drive vehicles into Australia to use while they are on holidays or on defence exchange in Australia.
To find out what approvals you need to bring your vehicle to Australia and drive it in Queensland, check the information for vehicles registered overseas temporarily being used in Queensland.
Vehicles registered in Queensland
Light vehicles less than 25 years old
In Queensland, all light vehicles (gross vehicle mass not exceeding 4.5t) that are less than 25 years old must have a right hand drive.
There are some special cases where a vehicle that is left hand drive is permitted to be registered and use Queensland’s roads. For more information please call 13 23 80 or email vehiclestandards@tmr.qld.gov.au.
Heavy vehicles
The majority of heavy vehicles that use our roads must have a right hand drive. For some specially designed vehicles, such as cranes or mobile drilling rigs, exemptions are in place that allow these vehicles to be used on the road.
For more information about heavy vehicle standards, including steering requirements and exemptions, contact the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator on 1300 MYNHVR (1300 696 487).
