Universal Design

Universal Design is a feature of an inclusive society. Making information accessible is 1 of the 7 principles of Universal Design.

Universal Design is a process which seeks to design products, places, policies and services for all people.

It means designing buildings, processes, and communication systems that are as accessible and inclusive as possible for all people.

Universal Design should be considered as a process, not an outcome.

It is important to understand that, when a solution is put in place for one person, it may create a barrier for another person. For example, creating loud safety announcements for people who are hard of hearing may adversely impact someone who has sensory processing issues with sound. It is important to consider the diversity of needs and experiences when removing barriers.
