Tips to ask for the information you need
Acknowledging access fatigue
We acknowledge the work people with disability do to educate others about their disabilities and access requirements.
This Disability Action Week, we hope to raise awareness of accessible communication as a shared responsibility.
We also want to make sure everyone has access to information they need to make informed decisions about their lives.
Asking for information that is accessible to you
All Queenslanders have a right to ask for accessible information, whether they are people with disability who need different formats or people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds who require information in their language.
It can feel hard to ask for information you need. Remember:
- it is ok to ask for what you need—you are the expert in your communication needs
- you have a right to ask for what you need to understand and be understood
- take your time—it’s an important conversation, don’t feel rushed
- consider bringing examples so you can show people what you need.
Where to get help
If you need help to ask for information from the Queensland Government, you can contact 13 QGOV (13 74 68). For more information on how to contact the Queensland Government, visit Contact us.
If you are d/Deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech/communication difficulty, contact us through your preferred National Relay Service call channel and ask to call 13 74 68.
Please call 1800 512 451 and ask for an interpreter in your preferred language.
Apps and AI
Technology helps people with disability connect and communicate and smartphone apps have opened up a world of possibilities for people with disability.
Apps are available to help people with low or no vision, for those who need support to speak, for d/Deaf people, and assistance with daily living.
We encourage you to reach out to support groups, your care professionals and the peers that support you for advice on devices, apps or other technology that may help you communicate.
Support groups/advocacy support
It’s ok to seek support when you need help.
Please contact your relevant peak body or support organisation to access the right support for you.
The Queensland Government also funds advocacy services for people with disability and their family members and carers.
