Choosing a sport
Finding a sport or type of physical activity that is right for you is a personal choice. It will depend on your own interests and goals, as well as your disability and your access to different sporting options.
These are some resources that can help you choose a sport:
- Information about a variety of sports—including archery, athletics, boccia, cycling, football, lawn bowls, powerlifting and wheelchair fencing—has been produced by Disability Sports Australia.
- The Australian Paralympic Committee can help you work out the different Paralympic Sports you may be eligible to compete in.
- The 'physical activity: choosing the one for you' guide by the Better Health Channel can help make exercise a more enjoyable part of your life.
- 'Come and Try Days' are offered by the Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association to help you trial a sport before taking on a season or buying equipment. View their calendar of events for the latest details and for all events being held in different parts of Queensland throughout the year.
Other physical activities
Regular exercise doesn't need to involve sport—here are other physical activities that you can participate in to enjoy the benefits of leading a healthy and active lifestyle:
- There is an accessible gym at the Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association Brisbane headquarters.
- Healthier Queensland includes exercise programs and other fitness advice.
- You might consider finding an exercise buddy and helping each other stay fit and active in different ways, like gardening, playing with pets or participating in recreation.
- Even tasks like household chores can provide an opportunity for you to participate in incidental exercise and improve your overall health.
Other ways to be involved
Sporting clubs don't just need players. If you have a passion for a sport but cannot participate with modified rules and classifications, you can consider other ways of getting involved, including:
- coaching
- umpiring
- cheering
- providing on-field support
- being an official
- assisting with administration
- working in a canteen
- helping with event organisation
- joining a committee
- organising a sports newsletter
- having a role in team management
- being responsible for website maintenance.
