Getting paid while training
As an apprentice or trainee in Queensland, you must be paid for time spent training and doing assessments.
The time you spend doing training is included in your ordinary hours of work but can take place outside of normal working hours.
You must be released from work and paid to participate in training and assessment, delivered by your training organisation, whether it takes place:
- at your work site
- somewhere else (for example, a TAFE campus or a private college)
- online.
Your employer must not block, discourage or disadvantage you from participating in any training or assessment.
Exceptions apply to school-based apprentices and trainees
School-based apprentices and trainees are treated differently to other apprentices and trainees and may not be paid for time spent training.
It depends on what industrial award or agreement your employer operates under.
