Unscheduled closures

Schools may have to close unexpectedly—sometimes at short notice. This could be due to natural disasters, health or safety reasons.

The decision to open or close schools and other facilities include factors such as current and predicted weather conditions, river and stream levels as well as road and access conditions.

The safety of students, teachers and community members is the department's highest priority. During weather events, parents and staff should monitor regular radio reports in affected areas. They are also advised to listen to updated weather forecasts and emergency services directives regarding the safety of road travel.

Concerned parents can also contact their principal or local education office for updated information about access to their children's school and updated classroom arrangements.

Early Childhood Education and Care Services

Parents are encouraged to contact their service provider directly for more up-to-date information about service closures and re-openings.

Parents using family day care are encouraged to contact their child's educator for details regarding closures.

Approved Providers make the decision to close and re-open their education and care services and are only required to notify the department within 24 hours of the service closing.

Schools close for holidays and also for a number of staff professional development days/student-free days each year. The staff professional development/student-free days are mostly at the beginning or end of holidays to minimise inconvenience.

Absences due to natural disaster
